One is that you feel happier just by acknowledging the blessings in your life right now. Another is that, if done often, it programs your mind to look for the good and not the bad in life. Finally, it lets your source know that you are open to receiving so that you may receive more abundance. Take a close look at your life and all you have to be thankful for; do not take anything for granted and give thanks often.
